An estimated one in 165 Canadian children under the age of six will be identified as having an autism spectrum disorder(ASD). Speech-language pathologists (S-LPs) have an important role to play in the identification and treatment of ASD because this disorder effects speech, language and other forms of communication.

Scenic southwestern Ontario will host the 34th annual conference of the Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA), April 29 - May 2. Professionals from across Canada will gather in the Forest City, London, Ontario, in pursuit of leading edge professional knowledge. Invited speakers will present on a wide range of topics including dysphagia, autism, stuttering, evidence based practice, dementia, swallowing, cochlear implants, cerumen management, audiologic rehabilitation, auditory neuropathy and more. In addition, for the first time ever, one full day of special programming will be offered for supportive personnel.

L'Association canadienne des orthophonistes et audiologistes (ACOA) a lancé un programme qui vise à montrer l'importance de l'identification précoce des problèmes de parole, de langage et d'audition.
Ce projet a été conçu dans le cadre d'un partenariat entre l'Association et l'Ordre des orthophonistes et audiologistes du Québec (OOAQ), grâce au financement du Réseau canadien de recherche sur le langage et l'alphabétisation. La pochette comprend une toise permettant de mesurer les enfants et un dépliant illustrant les principaux jalons du développement de la parole, du langage et de l'audition, de la naissance à cinq ans.

En prévision du magasinage des Fêtes, l'ACOA et les Élans et la Pourpre royale conseillent aux parents de faire preuve de prudence quand ils prévoient acheter des jouets bruyants pour leurs enfants. Ces jouets peuvent causer des dommages auditifs s'ils sont tenus trop près des oreilles et du visage, ce qui peut entraîner d'importantes difficultés de communication et d'apprentissage dans les années qui suivent. Un Canadien sur dix souffre d'un trouble de la parole, du langage ou de l'audition qui nuit à sa capacité de communiquer.

Une étude de 18 mois sur la collaboration interdisciplinaire dans les soins de santéprimaires a été publiée le 15 avril 2006 à Ottawa. Elle proclame qu'il faut poursuivre sur la lancée du travail d'équipe si le Canada souhaite relever les défis futurs du secteur de la santé et soutenir la durabilité de notre système national de santé.

Une conférence de presse a eu lieu sur la colline parlementaire le 13 janvier 2006 pendant laquelle l'ACOA a demandée aux chefs de parti de se concentrer sur les engagements en matière de santé.
L'ACOA aimerait que les problèmes de communication soient un élément important du système de santé. En outre, le Canada doit investir dans un plan à long terme sur les ressources humaines, assurant qu'aucun secteur du système de santé, notamment celui de la communication, ne souffre de pénurie ou d'épuisement du personnel.
Mai 2005 - L'ACOA adopte un nouveau code de déontologie
La déontologie régit le comportement de chaque membre d'une profession. En mai 2005, L'Association canadienne des orthophonistes et audiologistes (L'ACOA) a dévoilé un nouveau code de déontologie. Ce code formule les valeurs, principes et normes de base qui doivent guider le comportement professionnel des membres et qui permettrong de maintenir leur niveau de responsabilisation et de crédibilité auprès du grand public.
